Here are how I rank parts of your LinkedIn Profile in terms of importance. Your profile picture and your headline are by far the most important aspects because they will follow you on LinkedIn with every action you take. These are the only two parts of your profile that people will see even if they are not looking at your LinkedIn Profile specifically.

How to Optimize Your Linkedin Profile for Job Search

1) Profile Picture

Without a good profile picture you won't get very far. This doesn't need to be professionally taken by a photographer (although that never hurts), but it DOES need to be clear and absent of any distractions. You want this picture to be a headshot that is taken with you facing directly at the camera. If your background is not a solid color, make sure your face is the main focal point of the picture. Make sure to zoom in enough to get rid of empty spaces around your portrait, but don't zoom in so much that your face looks awkward.

2) Headline

Your headline is a very close second in regard to importance on LinkedIn. AVOID making your headline be a string of SEO type words that looks spammy and unprofessional. Your headline is a place to get people interested enough to learn more about you. Add your title, what else you do or are passionate about, and any unique traits. If you are passionate about Servant Leadership, this is a great place to add that. Try to keep words/phrases limited to 3 maximum, unless the phrase you are adding really looks clean and is important. Capitalize every word in your headline.

Example Headline: Pharmacist | Co-Founder Uptown Creation | Business Development | Instagram Marketing | Amazon Dropshipping | ENTP

3) Featured Section -

In this video I show you how to add the featured section to your profile. This is a great place to showcase any press, your website, posts that have performed well, and really just what you want your first impression to be. This area will be the first time someone is able to learn more about you from content outside of your profile. I would HIGHLY recommend making a 60-90 second About Me video that you can post. This will set you apart on LinkedIn and give people a great place to interact with you. In this video include who you are, what you do (or what you would like to do), and then what sets you apart from other people/what you are most passionate about.

4) About Section

The about section is the place to be a little bit more long form with you text. Have a paragraph (3-5 sentences) that explains your history/write it like a biography introduction on a personal level. The next paragraph should showcase your professional biography in 3-5 sentences. The final paragraph can include any unique things about you as well as any call to actions that you'd like to include.

5) Everything below the Activity section

I group into one bucket being the same level of importance. In this video I give examples of what to include, but the top 4 things are really what will set your profile apart from everyone else.
